Papai is a powerful reflection on the violence of patriarchy around the world, and the re-emergence of nationalism rife with sexism and homophobia. Written in “portoñol” (a mixture of Portugese and Spanish) by Yantó (Brazil) and Andrea Hoyos (Colombia), Papai has a happy beat but a somber message. The chorus is translated as “Papa don’t hit me, as I haven’t done anything wrong!” As Andrea explains the metaphor, “it's like a child talking to his father asking him to stop hurting him, and stop being drunk on power.”
