about

The melody for Ratauli came to Nepalese OneBeat fellow Jason Kunwar while he was jamming on his two-stringed sarangi with Egyptian Oud player Tarek Elazhary and Hungarian flautist Fanni Zahár. Jason later completed the piece and developed an arrangement with Fanni and Brooklyn-based guitarist and mandolinist Dylan McKinstry. “Ratauli is an event that takes place in the groom’s house after the male participants of the men’s wedding party have departed to the bride’s house,” Jason explains. “It’s an exclusively female ritual without male participation. During Ratauli, women of all ages sing and dance the whole night. Thus the English title is ‘Dance the Night Away.’”
